How rooms work
A short guide to chatting in community rooms.
What a room is
A room is a shared space to chat about the work you love. Rooms can be public (anyone can find and join), private, or invite-only (you need a link). Every room has its own name, topic, description, and members.
Joining and leaving
Browse rooms from Explore rooms or search for one by name or topic, then join with a single click. Public rooms are open to everyone. Invite-only rooms need a link from a member. You can leave any room at any time, and favorite the ones you visit most so they float to the top of your shelf.
Messages
Rooms support text, mentions, replies, reactions, edits, pins, image attachments, GIFs, and code blocks. Messages deliver in real time, with typing indicators and presence so you can see who is around. Unread counts and read state are tracked per room so you always know where you left off.
Roles
- Members read and post.
- Moderators keep the room healthy: they can pin, remove messages, and manage members.
- Owners run the room: settings, roles, auto-moderation, and invite links.
Moderation and safety
Rooms are moderated. Owners and moderators can set rules, banned words, slow mode, and automatic controls. If you see something that breaks the Community Guidelines, report the message or the room from its menu, or reach our Trust and Safety team. Be kind.
